Caliban Arts, Black Maple Records, with Trane Live present:
Fall/Winter Season Launch
SONGPOET: The 3 EPs take listeners on a worldbeat journey, with an eclectic mix of roots reggae, dub, hip hop, and R&B—a quintessential Michael St. George sound that he is well-loved for.
St. George’s work is inspired by a working-class upbringing in Kingston, Jamaica, and is dedicated to issues of justice and social equity. His message is thought provoking, positive, spiritual and seeks to incite constructive conscious change. St. George has been called “a member of the family of poets taking the oral tradition to new heights” for his unique style.
Part-funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, and produced by the artist himself at Black Maple Records, the SONGPOET has been four years in the making. St. George says, “…some ideas needed more time to ripen. Nothing before it’s time.”
Produced in collaboration with world-class musicians and producers from the UK, Afrika, Australia, Jamaica and Canada. From the (UK) Dr. Dennis Maestro Bovell, Kassa Alexander (Universal Records) and Jali Bakery Konteh, (Jamaica) Sheldon Bernard, The Legendary Earl Chinna-Smith, (Canada) Peter Holung, Charles ‘Tower’ Sinclair, Jeffery “Luge” Holdip, Glen Marshall (Australia) Alexander Richardson, Julian Bel-Bachir, Chris Lane (Gambia) Mafu Konteh, Tata Dindin Jobarteh, Tafa Artiste Taal, and the late Bambu ‘Bass’ Konteh. More in the liner notes.
SONGPOET 1 features Learn to Love You, Don’t Forget Your Dreams, Yes Canada, Writer Natty and If That Day, all provoking tracks that give a fresh perspective on these turbulent times of global socio-political change we are experiencing.
